Maysville, KY – Hazardous material abatement is nearly complete at Hayswood Hospital in Maysville. The abatement contractor, National Environmental Contractors (NEC) of Louisville, has “demobilized” and is now off-site. Left in place are security cameras and locked entrances for safety purposes.
The Hayswood site is situated on 2.46 acres on the south edge of downtown Maysville on 4th Street. The main building is a four-story structure that contains more than 65,000 square feet.
The building is now free of contaminants with exception of the west wing roof.
Abatement of the building’s west wing roof has not taken place due to structural concerns. Remaining funds of the project’s $1,999,990 Environmental Protection Agency Brownfields Cleanup grant will be used only for the roof abatement, Frontier Housing officials said.
Frontier is seeking separate funding to replace the roof. Renovation of the entire hospital building will be completed with other funding such as Kentucky Housing Corporation’s Low Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) and historic preservation tax credits.
Frontier’s most recent application for LIHTC was not approved but Frontier will re-submit the grant proposal during a KHC pre-application process.
Renovation plans call for 10 one-bedroom, 21 two-bedroom, 8 three-bedroom and 2 four-bedroom apartments in the remodeled facility.
The Hayswood property originally housed a private seminary for female students (Hayes Female Seminary) 1886-1908. It was sold some time after 1908 to the City of Maysville to be utilized as a site for a hospital. The building that stands today was constructed as a hospital facility. Hayswood Hospital was closed in February 1983 after a new hospital was opened, and the building has remained vacant since.
Frontier purchased the property in November 2022. Linebach Funkhouser, Inc. an environmental engineering firm from Louisville, was chosen to lead cleanup activities in June 2024.
