Maysville, KY – An informational meeting open to the public concerning the Hayswood Hospital Brownfield cleanup project was held Tuesday, Aug. 13, at the City of Maysville Municipal Building.
Representatives from Frontier Housing, Buffalo Trace Area Development District, and Linebach Funkhouser, Inc. (LFI), Environmental Compliance and Consulting, were in attendance to facilitate community discussion.
Mason County officials making short remarks were Maysville Mayor Debra Cotterill, Judge-Executive Owen McNeill, and Maysville City Manager Matt Wallingford.
The meeting also was accessible virtually, via computer or smartphone.
LFI was awarded the bid to lead environmental cleanup efforts at the Hayswood Hospital property in June 2024.
At the Aug. 13, 2024, public hearing, Robert Perkins, LFI Project Manager, said LFI would oversee remediation of the site. A Request for Proposals (RFP) for the project’s abatement contractor should be published within the week. The RFP will be posted for the required 30 days before bids are reviewed by Frontier Housing and Buffalo Trace ADD.
Perkins said cleanup is expected to take about 5 months, weather permitting. After the cleanup, the project will be turned over to Frontier Housing and the project’s architect.
Frontier Housing received a $1,999,900 Brownsfield Cleanup Grant from the US Environmental Protection Agency to remediate hazardous substance contamination of the Hayswood Hospital property at 20 West Fourth Street in downtown Maysville.
Perkins said during the remediation period, an asbestos trained technician will be on site. The public will see work trailers, boarded windows, dumpsters, and part of the building sealed in plastic.
Perkins assured the public that during remediation the site will be “completely safe” for citizens. Noise or dust issues should be directed to Perkins, he said.
Plans have not been finalized for use of the facility.
